At Hennekam Wine Consultancy, we’re transforming wine communication to make it more accessible, engaging, and relevant for today’s audience. Our mission is to dismantle the long-standing narrative that wine must be complex to be appreciated. For decades, this perception has been widely accepted, yet wine sales tell a different story. If complexity were the true draw, we’d see the industry thriving – but instead, consumers are craving authenticity, simplicity, and connection. We create a space where YOUR brand can resonate with customers on a deeper level, fostering genuine connections that go beyond the glass.
We believe every crisis is an opportunity to innovate and grow. Seizing these opportunities requires looking beyond conventional knowledge and having the courage to take bold steps. For us, this journey is one of continuous learning and exploration, driven by an unwavering commitment to knowledge and progress.
In the wine industry, many challenges arise from ingrained cultural and educational mindsets that can stifle creativity and limit communication. We are dedicated to breaking these barriers, fostering an environment that encourages creativity, growth, and meaningful change.
Our community, Rethinking the Wine Industry, has flourished since its inception in February, with nearly 10,000 subscribers to our TED-style newsletter. Through it, our members share fresh ideas and solutions that push the industry forward. In our closed WhatsApp group of 700 people from 65 countries, critical discussions shape our understanding of the sector's future. Our podcast, Vino Visionaries, features international guests with progressive insights, while our LinkedIn presence fosters debates akin to a forum on the industry's future.
Our mission is to champion collaboration, critical thinking, and bold innovation – challenging the status quo to unlock the wine industry’s full potential.
The wine industry stands at a critical juncture, facing challenges that could hinder its future growth if left unaddressed. To remain competitive and relevant in today’s landscape, the industry must evolve and adapt to the changing market. Our consultancy focuses on overcoming these pressing issues:
Resistance to Change: Many industry professionals hesitate to embrace new ideas and technologies, leading to missed growth opportunities and a stagnation that hampers progress.
Market Fragmentation: The wine industry’s fragmented nature makes it challenging for innovative solutions to gain widespread acceptance and impact, limiting the potential for industry-wide improvements.
Consumer Engagement: As consumer expectations shift, there’s a need for more personalized and meaningful experiences to deepen connections and foster loyalty within the wine community.
Educational Gaps: A lack of ongoing education and knowledge sharing within the industry slows the adoption of best practices and stifles innovation.
Our mission is to tackle these challenges head-on. We strive to create a culture of collaboration and adaptability, helping the wine industry evolve with the times. By fostering innovation, facilitating market adaptation, and improving consumer engagement, we aim to build a more dynamic, forward-thinking industry ready to thrive in the face of change.
At Hennekam Wine Consultancy, we believe that a connected, collaborative wine community is essential for innovation and lasting progress. By fostering open communication and engagement, we are reshaping the industry’s status quo and creating a space where knowledge flows freely, new ideas are welcomed, and challenges are tackled together.
Our international projects are at the heart of this mission, bringing bold, forward-thinking solutions to the global stage. We empower wine businesses and professionals worldwide to stay competitive, customer-focused, and inspired by change. Together, we’re building an industry that thrives on creativity, embraces transformation, and strengthens connections across borders.

Tim Hanni challenges the traditional notion of "perfect" wine and food pairings, asking us to consider their origins. Is this concept truly rooted in history, or is it a modern invention? According to Tim, many ideas around food and wine pairing are based on misconceptions and metaphors, he is calling "bullsh*t" and says it's detrimental to businesses. What if a customer wants to enjoy Malbec with sushi or Sauvignon Blanc with steak? Are they wrong, or is it the wine professionals who need to rethink their stance? It's time to question these "long-held" beliefs. Let's unlearn outdated concepts and embrace a fresh perspective. If we want to encourage more customers to enjoy wine, we need to stop telling them they're wrong. What do you think?
This episode is for anyone who wants to open their eyes and gain new perspectives. My favourite quote from the episode? “How do we buy shoes? We find the ones we like, we try them on, and we find the ones we like and we buy them. Nobody says you have to go to the Shoe Education Trust and learn about leather and learn about how they make shoes, how they make soles. Why can’t we treat wine the way we treat clothes?” Let me know what you took from this episode in the comments, and don’t forget to subscribe so our content will reach you first.
